antimicrobial effect of cyperus rotundus on multiple drug resistant pseudomonas aeruginosa strains

چکیده
background : medicinal use of plants dates long back in the history of the human beings and has recently gained a great deal of importance in treating different diseases. due to the importance of pseudomonas aeroginosa strains as agents responsible for common secondary infections and their resistance to antibiotics and disinfectants, the present study aimed at investigating the antimicrobial effects of the plant cyperus rotundus on multiple drug resistant (mdr) p. aeruginosa strains. methods : ethanolic extracts of cyperus rotundus tuber were prepared by maceration. the antimicrobial effect of these extracts on p. aeruginosa isolates (ie., sensitive to antibiotics and multiple drug resistant strains), isolated from clinical and soil samples, was determined by both disk diffusion and broth microdilution methods.. results : it was revealed that ethanolic extract concentrations of cyperus rotundus tuber higher than 0.1 mg/ml suppresses the growth of all antibiotic sensitive and resistant p. aeruginosa strains which were used in this study. conclusion : it is concluded that cyperus rotundus possesses antimicrobial properties and thus can be used in treating multidrug resistant p. aeruginosa -induced wounds and infections.

background : due to the importance of the metal zinc as an essential biological element with known toxic properties, and considering the widespread secondary infections caused by pseudomonas aeruginosa strains with resistance to antibiotics and disinfectants, the present study aimed at exploring the antimicrobial properties of the metal zinc in both clinical and environmental multiple drug resi...
متن کاملAntimicrobial Effect of Multilayered Carbon Nanotubes on Multi-Drug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the primary cause of infection with impaired defense mechanisms. P. aeruginosa commonly causes nosocomial infections and is the most common pathogen isolated from patients hospitalized for longer than 1 week. We examined the antimicrobial effect of multilayered carbon nanotubes on multi-drug-resistant. Materials and methods: In this research, 20 clinical i...
متن کاملAntimicrobial Resistance Profile of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Strains
Abstract Background and Objectives: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is the most common organism, which is separated from the burn infections. Due to increased antibiotic resistance, there are many problems to deal with the infections caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. This study aimed to determine the resistance to antibiotics against clinical isolates of Pseudomonas using phenotype me...

Cyperus rotundus Linn. rhizomes extracts were evaluated against six important pathogenic microbes viz. Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus cereus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus niger and Candida albicans . The powdered rhizome extracts were successively extracted with petroleum ether, chloroform, ethanol and water using Soxhlet apparatus. The antibacterial and antifunga...
متن کاملColistin, an option for treatment of multiple drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Introduction: Multi-drug resistant (MDR) P. aeruginosa is constantly increasing and causing severe issues in combatting widely spread health problems. The aim of this study was to assess colistin susceptibility in MDR P. aeruginosa isolates obtained from different infection sites. Methods: Ninety clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa were collected from different hospitals of the Tabriz Univer...
